“Adopting an attitude of universal responsibility is essentially a personal matter. The real test of compassion is not what we say in abstract discussions but how we conduct ourselves in daily life.” Dalai Lama
I was recently on a glorious vacation in Los Angeles. I took ten days off to play, rejuvenate and get some well-needed sunshine with my family. I was aware during my “time off” that the political crisis in Iraq was heating up.

“And the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom.” Anais Nin
The other day my sixteen-year-old daughter came home from school practically in tears. Sensing her distress I gently inquired as to how her day was. With animated emotion, she began to tell me about the project she is working on in science class. She’s studying electricity and has to build an electric generator. She made it abundantly clear to me that she’s never felt “dumber “ in her whole life and she hates the project.

“Be the change you wish to see.” Mahatma Gandhi
In the last issue of Along The Purpose Path I told the story of a client who’s been working to make a change in her life. She wants to grow her business while at the same time, decrease her stress level and increase how much she enjoys herself. She’s not alone.

It’s that time again, almost February. Deep winter in New England. Not only is it bitter cold and everything’s covered in ice and snow, we’re still months away from spring. Although the calendar says it’s spring at the end of March, if you live in New England you know spring doesn’t reliably show up until May. Ok, late April if we’re lucky.

“We cannot become what we need to be by remaining what we are.” Max Depree
It’s funny how the seemingly simplest events in life can be doorways into profound moments of self-realization and growth. I had a meltdown this afternoon. Albeit brief, it had all the qualities of a full-fledged tantrum. It was no fun.

“As we grow as unique persons, we learn to respect the uniqueness of others”. Robert H. Schuller
Last week, on my vacation I was having dinner with a group of special friends. These friends are affectionately known by many as “the grannies off the grid”. The grannies are three conscious, artistic, elder women who live on a beautiful piece of land in the Arizona desert. They live in sustainable, solar homes, which for the most part they built themselves. These women are an inspirational model of a future community that benefits many people.

The other day I was introducing myself to a group of busy professionals. I told them I especially loved to work with women who feel they are overworked and have no life; and lack balance between their work life and their personal life.

“Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?” Mary Oliver
Last week was one heck of a week! It all started with what I thought was a toothache. After a few days of building pain, I reluctantly went to my dentist to see what was the problem. I was hesitant because I was convinced the outcome was sure to be expensive. I’d probably need a crown or – gasp – a root canal.

Last Thursday was a remarkable day. My 18-year-old daughter, who is just about to graduate from her alternative high school, had to present her academic portfolio as a requirement of graduation. Her charge was to demonstrate mastery in several different learning realms to a roundtable of teachers, parents, and members of the community. Not an easy task.
